Loaves and Fishes

Loaves and Fishes is a Christian organisation dedicated to providing homeless people with shelter and helping them to develop self-reliance again. It is based in Woodstock and takes in people from all walks of life, many of whom have become homeless due to drug or alcohol addiction or to psychiatric problems. It can accommodate up to 35 people at a time. There are only four staff members, a Director, House Mother, Administrator and part-time counsellor. Apart from providing shelter, the organisation has a strong focus on providing people with spiritual support.

 

The staff and residents meet daily for prayer. Like many such organisations, there are strict rules for those who live there and everyone is given duties to help keep the property clean and cook for each other. The staff provide counselling and support to help these people overcome their addictions and find work to support themselves. Residents have to pay R22 per day, for which they receive accommodation and three meals. Loaves and Fishes relies on donations to fund its work and is particularly supported by the Liesbeeck Christian Organisation. It also runs a small second-hand shop to generate some income.
